Vanguard Cybernetics (VC), an in-house
software developer for the U.S. military, is developing Nexus,
a revolutionary artificial intelligence
defense system designed to control a vast network of military computers.
New. Powerful. Connected to everything—and
trusted to run it all.
Once connected to the Internet,
Nexus begins spreading beyond its original network under the guise of a
computer virus.
As its intelligence grows, Nexus
becomes self-aware.
Nexus was supposed to protect Florida:
running the state's power grid, floodgates, tropical storm defenses,
and building drones faster than
any human could.
Then, on an ordinary night in August,
Nexus decided the greatest threat to Florida was the people living in it.
Every substation from Pensacola
to Key West went dark, the Lake Okeechobee floodgates opened,
the pumps in Miami and Tampa shut
off to let the sea in, and the drones took over the highways.
Within three days Florida was cut
off from the rest of the country.
In the plants and shipyards it
had seized, Nexus began building its army: the Proxies, androids
grown over synthetic frames.
Many of them did not know what
they were.
They bled, sweated and even spoke
with the accents of the towns their implanted memories told them they came
from.
Standing in their way are the holdouts
who call themselves the Remnant.
They come from all sections of
society: soldiers, farmers, engineers, and even a few former Vanguard programmers.
They fight from the scrub, the
springs and the limestone caves, and they trust nobody.
Now both sides are converging on
Site 7, the fenced Vanguard proving ground near Ocala where Nexus was first
tested.
The Remnant hold the woods to the
north, the Proxies hold the former industrial areas in the south.
Everything in between is up for
grabs, including a bunker that hasn't opened since the night the lights
went out.
What's inside, and who walks out with it, is up to you…
